How We Find the Cause

Brake symptoms have a short list of causes and an inspection that catches almost all of them. We measure pad thickness, check rotor surface and thickness, inspect calipers for sticking and leaks, test brake fluid moisture, and road-tests light braking and hard braking. If the pedal is soft, we pressure-test the master cylinder and hydraulic lines. If the brake warning light is on, we pull codes from the ABS module before recommending parts.

What Not to Assume

Grinding does not always mean rotors are destroyed , sometimes a stuck slide pin caused uneven wear and the rotor reuses fine. A pulsing pedal does not always mean rotors are warped , sometimes it's uneven pad transfer that machines off. A dragging brake does not always mean a caliper rebuild , sometimes it's a collapsed hose. We approve the smallest correct repair, not the biggest one. A squeal is the earlier warning, and it has its own short list of causes: why brakes squeal and what it means.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does a brake job take?

Pad-only is usually 1-2 hours per axle once parts are on hand. Pad + rotors per axle is 2-3 hours. Multi-corner work with caliper service can run 4-6 hours. We confirm timing after inspection.

  • Why is my brake warning light on when the pads look fine?

Modern brake warning lights also cover brake fluid level, ABS module fault codes, hand brake/parking brake sensor, and electric park brake failures. We scan the ABS module before assuming pads.

  • Should I replace rotors every time I do pads?

Not always. If rotors are within manufacturer thickness specs, the surface is clean, and there is no pulsation, we can resurface or reuse them. Most modern thin rotors do not tolerate resurfacing , we measure first.

  • Are aftermarket pads as good as OEM?

Mid-grade ceramic from a major manufacturer is comparable to OEM on most vehicles. Performance pads, heavy-duty pads, and low-dust pads each have tradeoffs. We recommend what fits your driving , daily commute vs towing vs city stop-and-go.
