We check fluid color and smell, inspect pan and filter, and use platform-specific procedures (drain-and-fill, multiple drain-and-fills, or fluid exchange depending on the transmission). For CVTs and dual-clutch transmissions, we use the platform's specified fluid only.
What Not to Assume
"Lifetime" transmission fluid is a marketing term, not a maintenance schedule. Every transmission benefits from fluid service at some interval. We follow manufacturer recommendations OR a more conservative interval based on driving conditions (towing, heat, stop-and-go).

How often should I service my transmission?
Conventional automatic: 30,000-60,000 miles. CVT: 30,000-50,000 miles (or sooner with heat/towing). DCT (dual-clutch): per platform (often 40,000 miles). Manual: 30,000-60,000 miles.
Drain-and-fill or full exchange?
Depends on the platform and fluid condition. We recommend the right procedure per vehicle.
Can I damage my transmission with the wrong fluid?
Yes. CVTs are particularly fluid-specific. We use what your VIN requires.
Does my transmission have a filter?
Most automatic transmissions do (inside the pan). Some CVTs have an external filter. Some sealed transmissions don't have a serviceable filter. We identify per platform.
