How We Find the Cause
A P0420 or P0430 code (catalyst efficiency below threshold) is the most common entry point. We check for active vs pending codes, review freeze-frame data, perform a backpressure test (or measure pre/post-CAT oxygen sensor activity), inspect the converter for physical damage or rattling internals, and verify the upstream O2 sensor is reading correctly. A bad O2 sensor causes false catalyst codes more often than a bad catalyst.
What Not to Assume
A P0420 does NOT always mean a catalytic converter , it can be a failed downstream O2 sensor, an exhaust leak before the CAT, an upstream O2 sensor reporting bad data, or rich-running conditions that contaminated the CAT.

Why does my P0420 keep coming back after sensor replacement?
Could be a marginal converter that fails under specific drive cycles, an exhaust leak between the manifold and CAT, or an undiagnosed running condition (rich/lean) damaging the CAT. We re-test under driving conditions.
Are aftermarket CATs OK?
Quality varies. CARB-compliant CATs are required in some jurisdictions (NM and AZ vary by county). TX is more flexible. We use CARB-compliant CATs where required and OEM-grade aftermarket elsewhere.
Will my car pass emissions with a P0420?
Most states/counties require a "readiness" check that fails with a pending or active CAT code. Some areas require emissions testing in NM and AZ.
Can a CAT be cleaned?
Cleaning products work on lightly contaminated converters with the right driving conditions afterward. Once a CAT has internal damage or substrate breakdown, cleaning won't help. We assess condition first.
