How We Find the Cause

Overheating, coolant loss, or temperature gauge swings need a pressure test of the entire cooling system , radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat housing, and head gasket area. We check radiator cap pressure rating, inspect coolant condition and color, run the engine to operating temp while watching gauge stability, verify cooling fan operation, and use a block tester or chemical hydrocarbon test for head gasket suspicion.

What Not to Assume

Overheating does not always mean the radiator , sometimes it's the thermostat stuck closed, a failed water pump, a head gasket beginning to fail, or air trapped in the system after a coolant flush. White exhaust on a cold start does not always mean a head gasket , sometimes it's normal condensation. A leaking radiator does not always need replacement , sometimes a seam or fitting can be repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my temperature gauge swinging up and down?

Usually a sticking thermostat or low coolant level with air in the system. We pressure-test, bleeds the system, and verify thermostat operation.

  • My coolant smells sweet but I don't see a leak. Is that normal?

No , that's a coolant leak somewhere, often a heater core, a hose pinhole, or a cracked plastic radiator end tank. We use UV dye to find it.

  • Can I just keep adding coolant?

Short-term yes, long-term no. Coolant loss without a visible leak often means internal loss (head gasket) or evaporation from an under-pressure cap. We find the source.

  • Is mixing coolant types OK?

No. Different coolant chemistries (IAT, OAT, HOAT) react and form sludge. We identify your coolant type and use the correct chemistry.
