How We Find the Cause

Serpentine belts crack, fray, or develop glazing with age. We inspect the belt for visible damage, check the tensioner for proper operation (auto-tensioner failure causes belt squeal even with a new belt), and listens for bearing noise from pulleys.

What Not to Assume

Belt squeal does not always mean a worn belt , often it's a failing tensioner, a worn idler bearing, or pulley misalignment. Replacing the belt without addressing the tensioner returns the symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often should I replace the serpentine belt?

Inspect every oil change. Replace at 60,000-90,000 miles or when visible damage. Belt life varies with climate and oil contamination.

  • My belt makes noise. Is it the belt?

Could be belt, tensioner, idler, or a failing accessory (alternator, A/C compressor). We use a stethoscope to isolate.

  • Can I drive with a cracked belt?

Risky. A broken serpentine belt loses power steering, charging, A/C, and water pump (if belt-driven) all at once. Replace promptly.

  • Will a new belt fix my squeal?

Only if the belt was the cause. If the tensioner is weak or a pulley bearing is failing, new belt squeals too. We check the whole system.
